3 Years-Old

Dear Liam,

You turned 3 a few days ago! Happy 3rd birthday!  I cannot believe you are three!  When I look back on the last three years it feels like a whirlwind of love and awe.  At times it seems that I can barely remember life before you, which is okay because that life feels very insignificant to me.  You certainly gave my life greater meaning and a greater purpose.

Two was quite a year for you as you grew into your own little person.  You are now talking in full sentences and saying the funniest things.  I just love that you now tell me stories and can respond when I ask you about your day.

You transitioned to a toddler bed when you were around 2 and 1/2 years old.  Your dad and I were worried, but the transition went fairly smoothly.  Although we did have to put a special handle on your door to lock you in your room so you will stay in there at bedtime!  We have a sweet little bedtime ritual, and it's one of my favorite times of the day.  After you get in your jammies and brush your teeth, we read a few books and then you and me, or you and your daddy, or sometimes all three of us snuggle and sing songs.  We always sing the same special songs, Bid You Goodnight, Linger, You Are My Sunshine, and Down To the River to Pray.  I just love that you still like to snuggle and rest your head on my shoulder at bedtime.  I love the way your soft curls feel against my cheek and your little arms wrapped around me.  I treasure those moments because I know they will not last forever.

You still have your binky but only when it's time to sleep.  Somewhere along the way, last fall, you started needing two binkies to go to sleep!  You suck on one and then use the other to rub your cheek.  Now that you are three, someday soon the binky fairy will come visit you to take the binkies away.

You still go to Leenie's two days a week.  You love to go there and see your friends.  Annie is your best friend but you also like Skyler and Charlie.  It's so fun to see how much you enjoy being around other children.  You also love your friend Cecelia.   The two of you have so much fun when we go and see music.  You had a blast together at the Romp Bluegrass Festival.

You are really into superheroes these days.  Spiderman is your favorite, but you also really like Iron Man and the Hulk.  You are kind of fascinated by the Hulk but aren't quite sure about him because he looks scary!  You have a superhero Look and Find book that you have spent hours studying.  You really enjoy looking at all of those pictures.  You have recently started doing imaginative play, and you can sometimes be heard talking to Spiderman and the Hulk, which is pretty funny.  You also like the Star Wars characters and love to play with your Darth Tater.  When we go to the library, you always look for the Star Wars books.

You enjoy doing art projects and love to paint.  You usually start out using paint brushes but then end up finger painting.  I think you just like making a mess! You still really enjoy playing music too.  In fact, you love it when your daddy plays guitar with you.

You really enjoy doing puzzles and get great satisfaction when you figure one out all by yourself. You are obsessed with trucks of all kinds and anytime we drive by a construction site, you name all of the trucks that you see.  You got to drive an excavator with daddy in May when we were fixing the sewer line and you thought that was the coolest thing ever!

You love to be outside.  In fact, I try to get you outside every day because you have so much energy.  On days when I don't work, we often go hiking.  You are a pretty good little hiker and love to explore.  One of your favorite things is to throw rocks in the creek.  You could spend hours throwing those rocks!  You also really enjoy the park and love to climb and swing.  In fact, you are fearless when it comes to playground equipment and when we are at home we have to tell you not to climb on the furniture so you resort to climbing on mommy and daddy instead.

We went swimming a lot this summer.  You are a good little swimmer, especially with your puddle jumpers.  You love it so much that every time we leave the pool, you cry and ask to go back.

One of my favorite things to do is to watch you and your daddy play.  You just love your daddy and watching the two of you is the sweetest thing.  When your dad gets home from work, you yell his name and go running to him.  You can often be heard asking him "Daddy, you want to play with me?"  He is definitely your buddy and you want to be just like him.  If he's doing a project around the house, you are right next to him, mimicking his every move.  You love your tools because they are just like daddy's!

On your birthday, we had a special day with just our little family.  Your dad and I took you to the children's garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden for the morning.  You love it there!  We also ate ice cream cake and you opened your presents.  You got a big boy bow and arrow set, so your daddy taught you how to shoot it.  That evening, we ate pizza and then went to see some music at a park with our friends.

Whenever we get in the car, I always turn and look at you and tell you that you are my buddy.  In response, you say, "Mommy, you're my girl!"  The way you say it warms my heart and gives me the biggest smile.

You have started to test us some, and every so often you throw a little tantrum.  When you are mad or upset you stick out your lower lip and get the most pathetic look on your face.  It's heartbreaking but also super cute at the same time.

You really like Dylan, and like to snuggle up to him on the floor.  He's an old dog, but he's very patient with you and enjoys your affection.

This is definitely a magical stage that we are in.  I love watching you and listening to you talk. You are such a sweet little person. You have the sweetest smile, and I just love it when you break into a little grin.

You definitely light up my world in so many miraculous ways.  I am so blessed that I get to be your mommy.

Happy birthday Liam!  I can't wait to see what kind of magic 3 brings!

Mini-Me

One of my favorite things in the world is watching Liam with his daddy.  He LOVES his daddy.  You can tell that he wants to be just like Andrew, and it is the sweetest thing.  I call him Andrew's "mini-me." When Andrew gets home from a long day at work, Liam yells his name and goes running into his arms.  A frequent phrase in our house is, "Daddy, you want to play with me?"  or "Daddy, you see this?"

It's darling.  What these two have is so special, and I look forward to seeing how their relationship evolves over the years.

Just like Daddy!
All boy

Happy Father's day Andrew!  Thank you for all that you do for us!  Most of all, thank you for being such a wonderful daddy and role model for this little guy.

We love you!

Grateful Monday

It's been awhile since I've done a grateful Monday post, but this week, I really need it.

I'm hoping that this post will help me keep perspective as we deal with having to replace our sewer line.  This is a majorly expensive project, and it's gotten me frazzled.  I just keep telling myself that it will all be okay.  Once it's fixed, we won't have to worry about it anymore.  And when it comes time to sell this house, it will, hopefully, pay off!

I really just hope and pray that they don't find anymore problems once they dig a massive trench in my front yard.  Fingers crossed.

So today, here are five things that I'm grateful for:

  • Our health.  Whenever I start to feel overwhelmed or down about life's problems, I always remind myself that we are all healthy.  And that is priceless.  I would deal with this sewer problem any day over a health issue.  Hands down.
  • Our home.  While I'm not exactly loving our 110 year-old house at the moment, I need to remind myself that we are blessed to even have a home.  And a pretty darn cute one at that!
  • My parents.  They are making an impromptu trip to come see us tomorrow so my dad can be here for this project.  He's got a lot of experience in this area, and we are so blessed to have his expertise and help.
  • My husband.  I tend to be a nervous nelly, and he is always an optimist.  He's always so patient and compassionate and knows exactly how to calm me down.  I just love him.
  • Spring.  Though today is cold, we had a beautiful weekend.  And one benefit of having to dig up our landscaping is that I had no choice but to cut my hyacinths.  I've got bunches of them scattered about, and now, my house smells divine.

Here's to counting blessings and staying positive!

Have a wonderful week!

Grateful Monday

I am officially back from my week in Paris!  I came home sick so I'm behind on everything, but I'm feeling better and ready to get back into the swing of things.

I'm still editing photos but hope to have a post up this week sharing some details of the trip.

To start my week off on a positive note, I'm kicking off with a grateful Monday post.

Here are five things I'm grateful for:

  • We had smooth travels on our trip and returned home safely!
  • I didn't really get sick until I got home!
  • Skype.  I'm not sure I would have made it through a week away from my boys if it weren't for this wonderful invention.  There's just something so nice about being able to see them.
  • It's March.  So while it's snowing outside as I type, I'm hoping and praying spring is around the corner!
  • I came home to a clean house, clean laundry, and these beautiful flowers.  I think my husband missed me!  These beauties have continually put a smile on my face all week.  I'm a lucky girl.

Have wonderful week!

Grateful Monday

Well here we are to Monday again!  Last week was a bit of a whirlwind for me with the start of the new semester.  I pretty much collapsed at the end of the week and took one, very long nap on Saturday afternoon.  It was a good week but a tiring one!

So to start this week off on a positive note, here are five things I'm grateful for:

  • Did I mention I took a nap on Saturday? It was the kind of nap where you crash hard for a couple of hours and wake up not knowing where you are or what day it is. I can't remember the last time I slept like that.
  • Warmer temps over the weekend.  The polar vortex is about to strike again so it was really nice to get outside for a bit.  I even opened our windows on Sunday afternoon to get some fresh air in the house.
  • I officially started writing my dissertation last week.  It hasn't been easy.  In fact, it's been super slow and painful, but my first (very short) chapter will be done this week. I'm trying to celebrate the progress.  I also know that it will take me a bit to find my writing groove.  Baby steps!
  • My first classes went very well last week.  I'm really settling into this college teaching gig.  I was more excited than nervous before my first class, and that says a lot!
  • We just found out that some dear friends of ours are expecting their first child this summer.  I am so super happy and thrilled about this news!  They are going to be fabulous parents.
Have a wonderful week and stay warm!

Grateful Monday

To start my week off on a positive note, here are five things I'm grateful for:

  • We just came off a fabulous week-long vacation with my parents in Florida.  It was very low key and exactly what we needed!  I'm trying to hold onto some of that sunshine....
  • Our flights all went very smoothly and travelling with a two year-old was surprisingly easy.
  • When we got home, ALL of the snow was gone.
  • My semester starts this week and my teaching load is going to be a little lighter this semester.  I'm hoping that helps with the dissertation writing.
  • I actually feel pretty good going into this semester.  I'm ready to get the ball rolling and start making some progress!

Have a wonderful week!

Grateful Monday

Well 2014 sure is kicking off with a bang!  We are completely snowed in and frozen here.

My poor husband has to do snow removal for the municipality where he works.  He's been working 12 hour shifts for the past few nights and is getting ready to head into work again tonight.  Poor guy.  I know he's exhausted, but he's a trooper~!

So, to start my week off, here are five things I'm grateful for:

  • Andrew has stayed safe during his travels to and from work.  Our roads are in terrible condition.
  • We are snuggled up in a warm and cozy home.  I can't help but think of those poor people who are homeless.  I also think about the poor animals who are hunkered down trying to stay warm in this brutal weather.
  • I officially bought my plane ticket to Paris last week.  This is really happening!
  • Somehow, I'm managing to keep this little guy happy and busy while we are trapped indoors.  We've had our moments, but the new toys are definitely helping!

Liam's enjoying his new easel and paints!  A perfect snow day activity.

I hope you have a wonderful week!  Stay warm!

Grateful Monday

To start my week off on a positive note, here are five things I'm grateful for:

  • A nice, lazy, snowy weekend which allowed me to catch up around the house.
  • My grades are done for the semester!  Woohoo!
  • All of our gifts have been purchased.
  • The twinkle of Christmas lights, Christmas music playing on Pandora, hot cocoa, and spending time with my sweet boys.  The song below from Barenaked Ladies with Sarah McLachlan is my current favorite.  I can't get enough!
  • The excitement of spending the holidays with our families next week.

  • I hope you have a wonderful week!

Grateful Monday

It's been awhile since I've written.  Things have been busy!

This weekend we finished repairing and repainting our bathroom.  We had a leak that damaged our ceiling so it had to be redone, which also meant repainting.

Needless to say, I'm glad it's finished!

Anyway, to start my week off, here are five things I'm grateful for:

  • The bathroom is complete and my house is back in order.
  • The story of Batkid.  It warms my heart knowing how many people pulled together to make this little guy's wish come true.  Things like this reinforce my faith in humanity.
  • I'm over half way done with my Christmas shopping.
  • The article that I've been writing for the past six months (seriously) is nearing completion.  Finally!
  • Story time with this little guy.  I just love how much he loves books!

Have a wonderful week!

Grateful Monday

To start my week off here are five things I'm grateful for:

  • A beautiful fall weekend.  It was gorgeous!
  • Liam has a bad cold, I'm so grateful that I was able to stay home with him today.  We snuggled up and took it easy....well, as much as a two year-old will take it easy anyway!
  • We are looking forward to a backpacking trip with friends this weekend.  I need a little time in the woods.
  • We are also looking forward to a Halloween outing on Thursday night.  This will be Liam's first time trick-or-treating!
  • On Saturday we went to a winery to see some music.  Below is a snapshot of Liam playing his guitar with my friend Dave.  I'll be posting a video soon.  He definitely stole the show!

Have a wonderful week!

Grateful Monday

Here are five things I'm grateful for today:
  • Liam's love of the library.  We were there this morning and it warms my heart how much he loves books!
  • My PhD advisor.  I was part of a lovely brunch at her home yesterday morning and once again she's helping me and guiding me in a positive direction.  I honestly don't know what I'd do without her.
  • My teaching gig.  As hard as it is sometimes to find balance with my time, I truly love teaching and I love the connection that I'm starting to establish with my students.
  • The anticipation of the future.  I've got a lot of things in the works, none of which are guaranteed, but they are all fun and exciting opportunities.  I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much but definitely enjoying the possibilities.
  • Legos.  Liam was given a set of duplos for his birthday (thanks Megan!!) and he LOVES them.  Seriously.  He will sit in his room and play with them for an hour straight.  It's awesome on so many levels!

Have a wonderful week!

Grateful Monday

To start my week off on a positive note, here are five things I'm grateful for:
  • A nice weekend spent visiting with my husband's family.  It was great to catch up.
  • All of my grading is finally done.  Whoop!
  • Cooler temperatures have arrived, which makes it actually feel like fall!
  • My analysis of data for my dissertation is coming along....very slowly.  But at least I'm making some progress.  Baby steps.
  • This old boy.  He and I celebrated our 9th anniversary on October 4th.  He was about a year old when I got him, so he's slowing down a bit these days.  He's such a good dog, and I just love him so.

Grateful Monday

To start my week off on a positive note, here are five things I'm grateful for~
  • We had a lovely weekend.  We spent time at my family reunion and yesterday evening at an outdoor concert with many of our friends.
Liam thoroughly enjoyed the show!

He also enjoyed some time with his buddy Cecelia

  • I am also grateful for the people who tell me that it's okay if I don't work on my dissertation every day.  Sometimes I need help to shed the guilt and stop feeling like I'm not doing enough.
  • I ran 7 miles on Saturday.  This was a major milestone for me as I train for my 10 mile race.  I felt amazing on this run too.  That always helps.
  • Loving the cooler temps.  Hello fall!
  • Also loving my days at home spent with Liam.  As tough as it is sometimes, I know that I'm blessed and I treasure our days.  Here's a little glimpse of our morning spent outside.  We had ourselves a music jam on the deck.  The boy loves his drums!

Have a wonderful week!

Lately

I'm a list person.  I love to make lists, and I love to check things off my list!

So today, I'll be sharing a list of some random happenings and things going through my head.

Life is busy and hectic these days,  and as much as I love blogging, I just can't seem to find much time for it.

So here's what's been going on in our world lately....

  •  I am teaching two undergraduate education courses this semester.  I love it.  I'm pretty sure I was born to teach.  But it's a lot of work, and I'm struggling to find some balance.
  • I need to start analyzing my dissertation data but haven't been able to find the time because of teaching. Hopefully, I can get started this week!
  • Being a mom of a toddler is awesome and fun, but it's also exhausting.  On the days I'm home with him, I should spend the evenings writing or grading, but instead, I can barely summon the energy to sit on the couch.  I could really use a few more hours in my day....
  • Speaking of the toddler, here he is wearing his super hero mask.  He's starting to get into costumes, super powers, and playing pretend. Full on cuteness!

  • To help me unwind a bit, Andrew sent me out on Friday night to hear some music with friends.  Here's a picture of me and my besties.  The four of us go way back and this picture reminds me of the days when we were all footloose and fancy free!  What a super fun night.

  • The return of pumpkin spice flavors makes me oh so happy.  Seriously, sometimes it's the one treat that gets me through the day. Now if only the weather would cool off enough to pull out the boots!  I'm definitely ready for fall.
  • I am training to run this race again this year, 10 miles through the beautiful Shawnee National Forest.  I work best with a goal, and the runs are a good way to manage some of my stress right now.  Win-win.
  •  Have you seen the new Pottery Barn catalog?  Wow. Wow. Wow.  I'm loving the rustic, natural style.  I have pinned many images on Pinterest as inspiration for my future home.  It is totally normal to spend time thinking about your future home when needing to write a dissertation right?!

  •  Looking forward to the return of Parenthood next week!  It's one of my favorite shows and it's moved to Thursday nights, which means it will be a nice treat when I get home from teaching.
Have a wonderful week!

Grateful Monday

To start my week off here are five things I'm grateful for:

  • After a few very hectic weeks, I'm finally starting to feel like I have a handle on my new schedule and the start of the fall semester.  Whew!
  • A fabulous Labor Day weekend spent with old friends.  I'm still thinking about the fun we had~!
  • Liam has started talking in sentences. It seriously blows me away when this little person opens his mouth and talks....like really talks!  Amazing.
  • The return of Pumpkin Spice at Starbucks!  Now, if only our weather would get on board and start to feel like fall...
  • Looking forward to a quick visit from my parents this week.
Have a wonderful week!

Grateful Monday

To start my week off on a positive note, here are five things I'm grateful for:

  • I made it through last week! It was super hectic as I started teaching two new classes for the semester.  I also had to travel to Kentucky for a conference presentation. Whew!
  • My in-laws who came in on Friday to watch Liam for us that evening.  I had to leave for Kentucky and Andrew had to work an event that night.  I just love how much Liam loves all of his grandparents!
  • My fabulous adviser who is such a wonderful mentor.  Our trip to Kentucky gave us lots of time to chat.  I am so very blessed to have her!
  • Coffee.  I'm not sure I would have made it through last week without it!
  • We are gearing up for Labor Day weekend.  One of my favorite weekends of the year! We'll head to Camp Ondessonk again this year for their annual Friends Weekend.  I can't wait to catch up with some old friends.  We'll be staying in the treehouse unit seen below!  Fun times ahead!

Have a wonderful week!

Terrific Twos

As most of you know, Liam turned two a few weeks ago.  I know that we aren't very far into the "twos" but, I must say, two isn't so bad!  In fact, there are times when two is delightful.

Yes, we have our moments.  Moments when he's laying on the floor kicking his feet and screaming.  Moments when he throws his milk across the room and flings his food across the table.  In those moments, I'm very aware that he is testing me.  Trying to see how I'm going to respond and if a boundary is going to be set.  After spending years in the classroom, I know just how important those boundaries are.  I also know how important consistency is.  There are times when I have to force myself to follow through on things, but I know that if I don't, I'm going to be negating my own authority.

Despite those challenging moments, we are having a lot of fun.  I just love how his little personality is coming to life.  I also love that he is learning new words every day and is now putting sentences together.  I love that he can tell me what he wants.  I love that he says "please" and "thank you".  I love how he jumps around and plays air guitar.  I also love how he laughs and sings songs.

At times, his energy level is exhausting.  But it's also really fun to watch.  He wakes up with so much joy every day and is so excited as he discovers the world around him.

So, when it comes to the twos, I'm choosing to focus on the good.  And so far, two is good.  Really good!

Here are some pics from the three different birthday celebrations!

And We're Back! Kicking Off With A Grateful Monday

I've been a little absent from this space for the past few weeks.  Life has been full!

I plan to make a few posts this week to fill you in on what we've been up to.  But to start off, I'm kicking off the week with my grateful list.

Here are five things I'm grateful for this week:
  • A most wonderful vacation with my husband.  We just returned from a little getaway.  It was so nice to spend several days together, just the two of us.
  • My wonderful parents who watched Liam while we were gone.  It makes it so much easier for me to be away from the little guy knowing he is in such good hands!
  • My dear friends.  We ended our trip by attending the wedding of one of my college roommates, which meant that I got to see some of my best girls!
  • The fall semester is kicking off this week.  I've got a lot to do as I prepare to teach two classes, but it's so exciting to think that this will (hopefully) be my last year of graduate school!
  • My sweet little boy.  I missed him dearly while we were gone.  Yesterday when he saw us, he came running with his arms outstretched.  It was one of the sweetest moments I've experienced as a mom!
Here's a little glimpse of where we've been for the last week!  More to come soon.

Have a wonderful week!

Look Who's Two!

Dear Liam,
Happy 2 years!  You are so very big!

I can hardly believe you are 2.  When I think back to two years ago, I remember so clearly the feelings of  excitement, the anticipation, and then the moment when I finally got to meet you.  Those memories warm my heart.

You are so fun these days.  Full of energy and delight.

You are a talker.  Your current favorite phrase is "what's that?"  You ask that question all day long.  Right now, you tend to repeat most words that we say and you are starting to talk in phrases.  I love listening to you learn to talk.  It really is amazing how you have learned to communicate and how you get better at saying words every day.

You love music, and you love to dance and play your guitar.  You have recently started singing songs.   You like to sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and You Are My Sunshine.  You also like to sing your ABC's.  Many times during the day you'll ask me to turn on the music and "play a song".

You like to play outside.  You love your sandbox and your "lawnmowerer".   You also get very excited over bugs and "patatillers".  This summer we have been taking swim lessons.  You aren't much for floating on your back, but you do like to go under and to kick your feet.  Just last weekend you went fishing for the first time at the farm.  You were pretty excited when you got to touch a fish!

You are obsessed with helicopters.  You can hear a helicopter a mile away!  You also like to play a game where we lift you up and pretend you are a helicopter.  Your favorite part is saying "blastoff"!

You still love to eat.  Some of your favorite foods are cheese, avocados, waffles, pancakes, peanut butter, fruit bars, broccoli, and raisins.  You also love pizza and mac'n'cheese, of course.

You are super smart, and I'm constantly surprised by the things you know.  You can already count to 15 and you know your letters and colors.  You love to read books.  Some of your favorite books are Hop on Pop, The Splendid Spotted Snake, Little Blue Truck, Green Eggs and Ham, and All in a Day.

You are still a good sleeper and take naps most days.  You like to be cuddled and to sing songs before going to sleep.  Most nights you go to bed easily, although sometimes you like to throw your binky out of the crib and then yell "mommy....daddy....binky!"  That's also how you wake us up in the morning.  You throw your binky out and then stand up and call for us.  Funny little guy!

In the mornings, you like to wake up leisurely.  Your day starts with a cup of milk and usually a show on TV.  These days you are a big fan of Curious George and Super Why.

You still go to Leenie's house two days a week.  You love it there, and love to play with your friends.  Leenie takes such good care of you, and we feel so very blessed to have her.  She loves you as if you were her own!

Everyone talks about the terrible two's, but you are still your good-natured self.  You laugh and giggle all the time. Occasionally you get upset when you can't have your way, but for the most part, you are happy.  You are definitely exploring the world around you and you stay very busy!

You are very affectionate and give lots of snuggles and kisses.  I just love how you rest your head on my shoulder every night before you go to sleep.

Watching you grow and change is one of the best parts of this journey.  I just love how you are becoming your own little person.  You are such an entertaining little guy.

Just last night, we taught you how to say "I'm two" and to hold up two fingers.  After we put you to bed, we watched you on the monitor practicing saying "I'm two".  You are so very precious, and your dad and I just adore you!

Happy 2 years sweet boy!  I can't wait to see what wonders and joy two is going to bring.

Remember always that you are loved!

love,

Mama

Grateful Monday

Life has been BUSY recently.  So busy, in fact, that I'm feeling kind of overwhelmed.  It's a good overwhelm....because it means that my dissertation research is moving rapidly along, but it's also a little stressful.

So, as I start this very hectic week, here are five things I'm grateful for.
  • A nice visit with my husband's family over the weekend.  We didn't have much time, but the time was well spent.
  • Watching Liam "catch" his first fish at the Whitacre farm.  Oh boy was he excited!
  • Cooler and very pleasant temperatures.  What a rarity for the end of July.
  • Two conference papers accepted!  Both are at major conferences which is quite an honor.  Now I just have to figure out how to get a grant for the travel expenses.
  • My sweet little boy who turns 2 on Friday!  I can hardly believe it.  I'm so looking forward to a special day with just my boys!
 Have a wonderful week!
