3 Years-Old

Dear Liam,

You turned 3 a few days ago! Happy 3rd birthday!  I cannot believe you are three!  When I look back on the last three years it feels like a whirlwind of love and awe.  At times it seems that I can barely remember life before you, which is okay because that life feels very insignificant to me.  You certainly gave my life greater meaning and a greater purpose.

Two was quite a year for you as you grew into your own little person.  You are now talking in full sentences and saying the funniest things.  I just love that you now tell me stories and can respond when I ask you about your day.

You transitioned to a toddler bed when you were around 2 and 1/2 years old.  Your dad and I were worried, but the transition went fairly smoothly.  Although we did have to put a special handle on your door to lock you in your room so you will stay in there at bedtime!  We have a sweet little bedtime ritual, and it's one of my favorite times of the day.  After you get in your jammies and brush your teeth, we read a few books and then you and me, or you and your daddy, or sometimes all three of us snuggle and sing songs.  We always sing the same special songs, Bid You Goodnight, Linger, You Are My Sunshine, and Down To the River to Pray.  I just love that you still like to snuggle and rest your head on my shoulder at bedtime.  I love the way your soft curls feel against my cheek and your little arms wrapped around me.  I treasure those moments because I know they will not last forever.

You still have your binky but only when it's time to sleep.  Somewhere along the way, last fall, you started needing two binkies to go to sleep!  You suck on one and then use the other to rub your cheek.  Now that you are three, someday soon the binky fairy will come visit you to take the binkies away.

You still go to Leenie's two days a week.  You love to go there and see your friends.  Annie is your best friend but you also like Skyler and Charlie.  It's so fun to see how much you enjoy being around other children.  You also love your friend Cecelia.   The two of you have so much fun when we go and see music.  You had a blast together at the Romp Bluegrass Festival.

You are really into superheroes these days.  Spiderman is your favorite, but you also really like Iron Man and the Hulk.  You are kind of fascinated by the Hulk but aren't quite sure about him because he looks scary!  You have a superhero Look and Find book that you have spent hours studying.  You really enjoy looking at all of those pictures.  You have recently started doing imaginative play, and you can sometimes be heard talking to Spiderman and the Hulk, which is pretty funny.  You also like the Star Wars characters and love to play with your Darth Tater.  When we go to the library, you always look for the Star Wars books.

You enjoy doing art projects and love to paint.  You usually start out using paint brushes but then end up finger painting.  I think you just like making a mess! You still really enjoy playing music too.  In fact, you love it when your daddy plays guitar with you.

You really enjoy doing puzzles and get great satisfaction when you figure one out all by yourself. You are obsessed with trucks of all kinds and anytime we drive by a construction site, you name all of the trucks that you see.  You got to drive an excavator with daddy in May when we were fixing the sewer line and you thought that was the coolest thing ever!

You love to be outside.  In fact, I try to get you outside every day because you have so much energy.  On days when I don't work, we often go hiking.  You are a pretty good little hiker and love to explore.  One of your favorite things is to throw rocks in the creek.  You could spend hours throwing those rocks!  You also really enjoy the park and love to climb and swing.  In fact, you are fearless when it comes to playground equipment and when we are at home we have to tell you not to climb on the furniture so you resort to climbing on mommy and daddy instead.

We went swimming a lot this summer.  You are a good little swimmer, especially with your puddle jumpers.  You love it so much that every time we leave the pool, you cry and ask to go back.

One of my favorite things to do is to watch you and your daddy play.  You just love your daddy and watching the two of you is the sweetest thing.  When your dad gets home from work, you yell his name and go running to him.  You can often be heard asking him "Daddy, you want to play with me?"  He is definitely your buddy and you want to be just like him.  If he's doing a project around the house, you are right next to him, mimicking his every move.  You love your tools because they are just like daddy's!

On your birthday, we had a special day with just our little family.  Your dad and I took you to the children's garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden for the morning.  You love it there!  We also ate ice cream cake and you opened your presents.  You got a big boy bow and arrow set, so your daddy taught you how to shoot it.  That evening, we ate pizza and then went to see some music at a park with our friends.

Whenever we get in the car, I always turn and look at you and tell you that you are my buddy.  In response, you say, "Mommy, you're my girl!"  The way you say it warms my heart and gives me the biggest smile.

You have started to test us some, and every so often you throw a little tantrum.  When you are mad or upset you stick out your lower lip and get the most pathetic look on your face.  It's heartbreaking but also super cute at the same time.

You really like Dylan, and like to snuggle up to him on the floor.  He's an old dog, but he's very patient with you and enjoys your affection.

This is definitely a magical stage that we are in.  I love watching you and listening to you talk. You are such a sweet little person. You have the sweetest smile, and I just love it when you break into a little grin.

You definitely light up my world in so many miraculous ways.  I am so blessed that I get to be your mommy.

Happy birthday Liam!  I can't wait to see what kind of magic 3 brings!

Mini-Me

One of my favorite things in the world is watching Liam with his daddy.  He LOVES his daddy.  You can tell that he wants to be just like Andrew, and it is the sweetest thing.  I call him Andrew's "mini-me." When Andrew gets home from a long day at work, Liam yells his name and goes running into his arms.  A frequent phrase in our house is, "Daddy, you want to play with me?"  or "Daddy, you see this?"

It's darling.  What these two have is so special, and I look forward to seeing how their relationship evolves over the years.

Fixing their chainsaws

Just like Daddy!
All boy

Happy Father's day Andrew!  Thank you for all that you do for us!  Most of all, thank you for being such a wonderful daddy and role model for this little guy.

We love you!

37 Years.....

Tomorrow is my birthday.

I don't mind.  I've always thought of each passing birthday as a blessing, and with each year comes the gift of more wisdom and more perspective.  As I get older, I also find myself more comfortable in my own skin.  That alone is worth so much.

Source

So here I am at 37 years young.  I've learned a lot in my 37 years, but here are 10 things I know for sure.
  1. Happiness is a choice. It's not something that happens when the conditions are right.  I choose happiness every single day.
  2. Good health is a gift that should be cherished.  It can be stolen away in a blink of an eye, at any age.   Taking care of my body and making healthy choices is essential.
  3. Life is about people.   Family and friends are at the center.  Surround yourself with good ones. I'm a much better person because of the wonderful people around me.
  4. Spending time in nature always makes me feel better. When in doubt, get outside.  Unplug.  Breathe.  Be still and listen.
  5. Education is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves. Knowledge really is power.  Never stop learning.
  6. Kindness really does pay off.
  7. A strong marriage is based on friendship and trust.  My husband is my favorite person. We tell each other everything, and I wouldn't want it any other way.
  8. Sunscreen is mandatory. If only I could go back and tell this to my teenage self.
  9. Music is food for the soul.  Listening to one of my favorite songs is like magic, if only for a little while.
  10. Faith is essential.  Believing in a higher power brings me great comfort.  Often times, it's my only comfort as I try to make sense of this big, bad world we live in.

The older I get, the more certain I am of these 10 truths.

Hello 37.

I can't wait to see what you bring...

Welcoming 2014

2013 was a good year for us.  It was a relatively quiet, smooth year without a lot of change or excitement, and I'm perfectly okay with that.  When I look back to my goals and intentions for 2013, I'm proud to say that I did a pretty good job.  Of course I was better in some areas than others, but for the most part, I stuck with them and they've become a regular part of my life.

As we begin 2014, I'd like to continue the tradition.  Rather than making a New Year's resolution, I want to just lay out some goals and intentions for myself....areas where I'd like to improve or perhaps refocus a bit. So, in no particular order, here they are:

  • Floss daily.  This is a hard one for me.  I despise flossing.  I mean really, there's nothing fun about it.  It's gross.  It hurts my gums.  Bleh.  But every time I go to the dentist, I'm told I need to floss.  So, for once in my life, I'm going to commit to this.  It's 2 minutes out of my day right?  I can do this and my teeth will thank me.
  • Continue to be present with Liam.  This is a carry-over from last year, and since I find that this one requires constant attention, I'm adding it to this year's list.  This one can be difficult.  Especially in this technological age where we are constantly bombarded by distracters.  So....I want to continue to stay tuned in and to give him my full attention during our time together.
  • Less Facebook.  I have mixed feelings about Facebook.  I really do enjoy connecting with friends and seeing what people are up to.  However, I find that it can be a huge time suck.  So, in an effort to be more present, I want to limit myself to only checking it a couple of times a day.  I just deleted the app from my phone and already I feel a huge difference.  It's just too easy to mindlessly pick up my phone and get sucked in.  Truthfully, deleting it felt strangely liberating....
  • Eat mindfully.  I plan to do a post on this soon, but I've been making some major dietary changes and it's having a profound effect on my well-being. I want to continue this practice because I am feeling so much better!
  • Pray more and worry less.  I heard this phrase the other day and it has stuck with me:  "Worrying is like praying for something you don't want".  I tend to be a bit of a worrywart so this really resonated with me.  I'm going to use this phrase to help me stop my unnecessary worrying in it's tracks, choosing instead, to focus on my blessings.

Source

  • And finally, I WILL finish my dissertation.  I saved this one for last because it's closely tied to my word for the year.  This it folks.  This is my year of completion, and I plan to do whatever it takes.

So, for 2014, I have chosen the word faith.

Source

Recently, I find myself being called to faith in multiple ways.  I need to have faith that I will finish my PhD.  I need to have faith that I will find a job when I'm done.  I need to have faith that we'll be blessed with another child.  I need to have faith that I am exactly where I am supposed to be....and the list goes on.

I have also recently found myself being pulled back towards my faith and my relationship with God.  It's not that I ever stopped believing or praying, but I definitely became less intentional about it.  This year I feel called to recenter myself in my faith, a journey which begins with a return to the church.  It's not that I ever disliked going to mass, I just didn't make it a priority.  These days, however, I find that I need that weekly meditational time to keep me centered.

Source

I have so many hopes for this year and I must have faith that it will all play out exactly as it should.

So 2014 is about faith. Finding faith and keeping the faith.

Lately

I think I've finally recovered from my trip to Dallas last weekend!  I'm not even going to bother to write a post about the whole fiasco because it's just not worth the energy, but let's just say I came home exhausted!

The conference itself was awesome.  Getting stranded and having to deal with American Airlines was not so awesome.  My flights kept getting cancelled, and I spent many, many hours on the phone trying to get re-booked.

But alas, I made it home safely!

Life has been a whirlwind so here's a little update:

  • My semester has officially ended!  It was a great semester teaching.  I got wonderful feedback from my students.  I did not, however, make nearly as much progress on my dissertation as I had hoped.  That means its time to refocus and re-prioritize.  2014 is my year to finish!
  • While I was away, my boys surprised me and put up our Christmas tree.  You have no idea how sweet it was to come home to those twinkling lights. I was so exhausted from being up all night and seeing the tree nearly brought me to tears.  It was so sweet. Liam is completely obsessed with the Christmas tree by the way.  Every morning, the first thing he does is ask me to turn on the lights!

  • I love looking at our tree and seeing ornaments from my childhood.  Growing up, we were given a special ornament each year.  There are so many happy, special memories tied to each of those ornaments.  I have continued the tradition with Liam.  This year, his ornament is a Cozy Coupe.  It's fitting considering how many hours he spent in his this summer.

  • Speaking of holiday decorations, I look at this holiday house tour and this one, and I'm completely inspired.  This year, however, it's just not in the cards.  This year, we kept it super simple with just our little tree and a few other decorations. Perhaps one day, when I'm no longer a graduate student, I'll have the time and energy to really do it up!
  • I just started reading this book.  I was a vegetarian for several years into my mid-twenties. Recently, I've felt an inclination to return to the lifestyle. I do, however, enjoy eating meat. And my husband is definitely a meat eater.  I think this might be the perfect compromise for us.  The book is full of really insightful nutritional information.  I consider myself pretty informed in this area but he's touched on several things I didn't know.

  • I have also recently started doing yoga again.  I am using this DVD, which I love!  Since this past summer, I have had lower back pain, on and off.  I decided to take a break from my high impact, cardio workouts and do something more gentle, in hopes that the lower back pain will go away.  I have always enjoyed yoga and have read that it's one of the best ways to combat back pain.  In terms of yoga though, I only really like it when it's challenging.  I still want to feel like I'm exercising!  Ashtanga is a more rigorous form of yoga and I am definitely challenged.  Already I feel stronger and more flexible.  It's kind of remarkable.

  • Liam is totally into Christmas this year.  I'm not sure he really understands what is going on, but he talks about Santa a lot!  I just got him a few books to help him understand what Christmas is really about.  This book is my favorite.  I cannot get over how much I love this story....which talks about the trees, the animals and the stars all rejoicing over the coming of  Jesus.  Truly, a beautiful story.

  • I am currently drinking this hot chocolate.  So good!  Have I ever talked about my love of mint combined with chocolate?  I can't get enough.

  • Which is why I plan to make these brownies to take to my family's holiday gathering.  I hope they are as good as they look!

  • And speaking of Trader Joe's, have you ever had Cookie & Cocoa Swirl?  Whoa.  I don't think I should be allowed to buy this stuff again because somehow, I just end up eating it straight out of the jar!

  • Andrew and I just finished watching Under the Dome.  I wasn't sold on it at first, but now I'm hooked.  The series was renewed for a second season, which means that the final episode totally left us hanging.  I hate it when they do that!

  • We are happily gearing up for the holidays!  We'll be gone more than a week travelling to various locations to be with our families.  My grades are done.  Our gifts are wrapped.  And I'm truly looking forward to spending some quality time with the people we love~!

Grateful Monday

To start my week off on a positive note, here are five things I'm grateful for:

  • A nice, lazy, snowy weekend which allowed me to catch up around the house.
  • My grades are done for the semester!  Woohoo!
  • All of our gifts have been purchased.
  • The twinkle of Christmas lights, Christmas music playing on Pandora, hot cocoa, and spending time with my sweet boys.  The song below from Barenaked Ladies with Sarah McLachlan is my current favorite.  I can't get enough!
  • The excitement of spending the holidays with our families next week.

  • I hope you have a wonderful week!

Finding Some Confidence

With the semester ending and the holiday season beginning, I've not had much time to blog recently.

I'm currently stuck in Dallas because of the winter storm and find myself with some unexpected free time.  This is the view from my hotel window.  It doesn't look too bad from here but there's a lot of ice.

My flight home today was cancelled and I'm on hold, at this very moment, trying to talk to the airline.  The airport here is basically shut down, and  I don't really expect to get out of Texas anytime soon.  I'm a little frustrated....and super bummed that I won't get home to see my boys today.  I've been away for four days, and I miss them terribly. But I'm trying to be positive.  I'm definitely grateful that I'm still at the hotel and not stuck at the airport sleeping on a cot, but I'm ready to be home.

I'm here for a literacy conference and yesterday I presented a paper.  This was my first time presenting at a conference of this size and status.  Needless to say, I was a little nervous and certainly felt out of my league.  However, the presentation went beautifully, and I received some very positive, encouraging feedback about my study.  In fact, multiple people asked to read my paper!

Academia can be an intimidating field, and I'm often haunted by feelings of insecurity.  I doubt myself and my abilities, but with each success, those self-depleting voices are slowly becoming silenced.  After seeing several other presentations and getting such positive feedback yesterday, I have a renewed sense of belief in myself.

I also feel re-inspired to get this paper done and put it out there for publication, something I've been avoiding because of my fears that it wasn't good enough.  I'm reminded of a quote I once heard:

“If you are lucky enough to find a way of life you love, you have to find the courage to live it.” ~John Irving

I am finally starting to feel like I can play in this playground and do so with some confidence. It feels good....really, good.

Fall Favorites

It's no secret that I love autumn.  Having grown up in the Midwest, I have a certain appreciation for the change of seasons, and the fall season is one of my favorites.

It tends to be a busy season for us as we try to maximize our time outdoors and enjoy the beautiful weather. I'm okay with that because I know that the winter season usually brings slower days spent indoors.

So what do I love about autumn?  I love the cool crisp mornings combined with warm, sunny days. I love watching the colors change on the trees.  I love pulling out my boots and sweaters.  I love drinking hot cider and the smell of leaves burning.  I also love the traditional fall activities of bonfires, hayrides, and visits to the pumpkin patch.

We try to get outdoors as much as possible this time of year.  Liam and I have been hiking at least once a week for the past month. These pics are from our family hike last week.  The little guy was beaming the entire time.

While we spend a lot of time outdoors, I also like to bring a little fall indoors. Our house is small so I don't have a lot of space for seasonal decorations, but I do add a few touches.  In our next home, I hope to have a fireplace.  I would love to have a mantel to change up with the seasons, but until then, I like to keep it pretty simple.

I frequently change up the centerpiece on our dining room table.  I love the vibrant colors of these fall leaves.

I'm also big on natural touches and have a thing for candles.  This little arrangement sits on my grandmother's antique sewing machine.

One of my favorite ways to change my decor is to change out our decorative pillows.  I love the fall colors and embroidery in the middle pillow.

I also have a love for all things pumpkin.  I light this candle every evening and I love how my house smells!

I also recently discovered Trader Joe's pumpkin butter.  Wow.  So good!

In an attempt to save money, I also started making my own pumpkin spice latte using this recipe.  It's so good and gives Starbucks a run for it's money.

Happy fall!  I hope you get to enjoy all that this beautiful season has to offer!

Lately

I'm a list person.  I love to make lists, and I love to check things off my list!

So today, I'll be sharing a list of some random happenings and things going through my head.

Life is busy and hectic these days,  and as much as I love blogging, I just can't seem to find much time for it.

So here's what's been going on in our world lately....

  •  I am teaching two undergraduate education courses this semester.  I love it.  I'm pretty sure I was born to teach.  But it's a lot of work, and I'm struggling to find some balance.
  • I need to start analyzing my dissertation data but haven't been able to find the time because of teaching. Hopefully, I can get started this week!
  • Being a mom of a toddler is awesome and fun, but it's also exhausting.  On the days I'm home with him, I should spend the evenings writing or grading, but instead, I can barely summon the energy to sit on the couch.  I could really use a few more hours in my day....
  • Speaking of the toddler, here he is wearing his super hero mask.  He's starting to get into costumes, super powers, and playing pretend. Full on cuteness!

  • To help me unwind a bit, Andrew sent me out on Friday night to hear some music with friends.  Here's a picture of me and my besties.  The four of us go way back and this picture reminds me of the days when we were all footloose and fancy free!  What a super fun night.

  • The return of pumpkin spice flavors makes me oh so happy.  Seriously, sometimes it's the one treat that gets me through the day. Now if only the weather would cool off enough to pull out the boots!  I'm definitely ready for fall.
  • I am training to run this race again this year, 10 miles through the beautiful Shawnee National Forest.  I work best with a goal, and the runs are a good way to manage some of my stress right now.  Win-win.
  •  Have you seen the new Pottery Barn catalog?  Wow. Wow. Wow.  I'm loving the rustic, natural style.  I have pinned many images on Pinterest as inspiration for my future home.  It is totally normal to spend time thinking about your future home when needing to write a dissertation right?!

  •  Looking forward to the return of Parenthood next week!  It's one of my favorite shows and it's moved to Thursday nights, which means it will be a nice treat when I get home from teaching.
Have a wonderful week!

Joshua Tree

Last month Andrew and I spent a few days visiting Joshua Tree National Park.  Since we were headed to San Diego for a wedding, we decided to tack on a few extra days and hit up a national park.

It was an awesome trip!  We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.  And as much as I missed Liam, I must admit that it was very nice to spend several days alone with my husband, just the two of us.

Since it was August, in the desert, we decided to stay in a cabin.  Our cabin was adorable, comfortable, and well-equipped.  It sat adjacent to the park, and it was so nice to come in midday to nap and relax in the air conditioning.  At night, it was cool enough for us to sit in the hot tub while watching for shooting stars in the desert sky.

View from our front porch into Joshua Tree National Park
I'm fascinated by the flora and fauna of the desert.  Here are some of the various cacti we saw.  I need to give credit to my husband for taking these pictures.  He was up at sunrise exploring on our first morning while I cozily slept in!

On our first day, we took a late morning hike up Ryan Mountain.  It was quite hot but the view from the top was worth it.

View from the top of Ryan Mountain

These dead trees were everywhere and looked like sculptures

After an afternoon nap, we returned to the park that evening to catch the sunset.

The next morning, we were up early for a sunrise hike to Willow Hole.  We had 7.5 miles to cover so we hit the trail early.

Cool enough for long sleeves at dawn

Beautiful Joshua Tree

Willow Hole

Wonderland of Rocks
This hike was my favorite part of our trip.  As we hiked to Willow Hole, we came upon the Wonderland of Rocks. For miles all we could see were beautiful mountains of rocks and boulders piled on top of one another.  It looked like something out of a science fiction movie.

After our hike to Willow Hole, we drove to the southern end of the park and hiked a 3 mile loop up Mastodon Peak.  At the start of the hike is a palm oasis. It was so bizarre to see these huge palms in the middle of the desert.  They housed quite an ecosystem.

Palm Oasis
This portion of the park is in the Colorado desert which looks quite different than the Mojave desert, which has the Joshua Trees.  This section was rocky and barren.  If you look closely at this picture, you can see the Salton Sea in the distance.

My favorite hiking buddy

He's more adventurous than I am!
The old Mastodon Mine is also on this trail. I still can't quite wrap my head around how they built this mine on a mountain in the middle of this harsh desert.

Later that evening we returned to the park to visit the Arch.

As far as national parks go, Joshua Tree is pretty small so we really got to see most of it in just a few days.  It was a great trip.  We spent some quality time together, did some challenging hiking, and got to explore a really unique landscape.  And, we got to check another national park off our list!

I just love that Andrew and I share the same love for the outdoors.  It's so nice to journey on these adventures together!
